What Are Dental Implants And When Are They Used

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed in your jaw for a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are usually performed by periodontists. They are a great way to replace one or more missing teeth. They are an ideal option for people in good general health, but have lost oral teeth or teeth due to periodontal disease, injury, or other reasons.

If you have lost a tooth or teeth, you will probably be the possibility of dental implants or a bridge to replace the missing tooth or teeth. Dental implants are very involved and time consuming, but more tooth-saving than traditional bridge work. This is because the implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. Dental implants are like a natural tooth to replace the missing one. They are so natural looking and feeling, you can forget you ever received an implant.

Dental implants serve three important functions:

Replace one or more teeth without adjacent teeth.

Support a bridge and eliminate the need for a removable partial denture.

Support for a denture, making it more safe and comfortable. Dental implants are often recommended for patients with bone loss throughout the mouth and a loose lower denture because it is a dental implant, the denture in place.

The two most common types of dental implants used today are endo steal (in bone) and subperiosteal (on the bone). Endo Steal is the most used type of implant. The various types include screws, cylinders or blades surgically placed in the jawbone. Each implant holds one or more prosthetic teeth. This type of implant is usually used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures.

Subperiosteal implants are placed at the top of the jaw with the metal frame excellent messages through the gum to the prosthesis. These types of implants are usually used for patients who are unable to wear conventional dentures and who have a minimum height of the bone.

As you may have guessed, the current X-rays are necessary for periodontists to make accurate diagnosis of what kind of implant you need. You can also ask whether an insurance cover dental implants. Approximately half of the insurance and who say: a dental implant and related services is not an advantage, will often consider pay as a bridge instead.

The steps for a dental implant generally include:

1. Surgery: During surgery, the doctor an incision in your gum tissue to the implant post directly into the bone. The current x-rays, the doctor is then able to determine the implant after the right one. He or she will use a drill for an entrance exam site in the bone at the site of the implant. An x-ray is taken to ensure that the implant is placed correctly. Surgery to place an implant is often less traumatic than surgery for the tooth. The doctor will complete surgical sutures by the implant.

2. A post-op appointment and a suture removal appointment is made.

3. Usually three months or so after the first operation, you can create a follow-up appointment for an x-ray to determine if the bone is healing around the implant. If your implant is healing well, you can make an appointment to discover after the implant and attach an abutment. An impression may be taken soon after a crown placed on the implant post.

4. The impression is sent to the lab for a custom implant crown.

5. A few weeks later, your missing tooth is replaced by the crown and the treatment is completed.

In short, what happens during a dental implant procedure is that an implant post is placed in the bone and gum tissue and bone heal around it. A bear is the confirmation that is placed on top of the implant post. A crown is made and cemented to the abutment. Your missing tooth is replaced by a natural feeling and natural looking dental implant and crown.

Under the right circumstances, such as the placement of a periodontist and diligent patient maintenance, implants can last a lifetime.
